This edited volume marks the very first title published under the newly established partnership between Al-Mahdi Institute and De Gruyter Brill, bringing together leading scholars in theology, philosophy, and religious studies — including AMI’s own Dr. Zoheir Esmail and Professor Abolghasem Fanaei — to examine one of the most foundational — and most contested — questions in Islamic thought: what it means to affirm the oneness of God.
Though divine oneness (tawhīd) sits at the very heart of Islamic faith, its precise meaning has been debated across centuries. This volume traces those debates, exploring how different Islamic traditions have understood God’s uniqueness, His relation to creation, and the problem of religious language. It engages the enduring tension between philosophical reasoning and scriptural interpretation, and gives careful attention to intra-Muslim disagreements on competing positions within kalām, legal thought, and philosophical theology.
