Dr Shabana Mir is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Director of Undergraduate Studies at American Islamic College, Chicago. She is the author of the award-winning book and the first ethnography of Muslim American youth Muslim American Women on Campus: Undergraduate Social Life and Identity, published by the University of North Carolina Press (2014). The book has received the Outstanding Book Award from the National Association for Ethnic Studies and the Critics’ Choice Award from the American Educational Studies Association (2014). Dr. Mir taught at Millikin University, Oklahoma State University, the University of Southern California online, Indiana University, Eastern Illinois University, and the International Islamic University, Islamabad. She has a Ph.D. from Indiana University, Bloomington, an M.A. in English Literature from Punjab University (Pakistan) and an M.Phil. in Education from Cambridge University (U.K.). She has lived, studied, and taught in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Pakistan. She is an international public speaker on gender, religion, education, and politics.
During her time at AMI, Dr Mr will be presenting her research at the CIMS Academic workshop titled ‘Muslim Engagement with Gender and Sexuality‘ and at a forthcoming research seminar. She will also be delivering a book talk on her award-winning publication, ‘Muslim American Women on Campus: Undergraduate Social Life and Identity.’
Fellowship Experience:
I experienced AMI’s conferences and community activities. I enjoyed and benefited considerably from the events and activities I attended, especially the Ramadan programming by Time for Change. I also learned a lot during the scholarly events organized on campus.
AMI organizers were very generous with support and resources. The conference was excellent and well organized, and I learned much from the discussions. Ramadhan events were most informative and spiritually rejuvenating.
I would love to be a Visiting Fellow again. This time, I would have a better and clearer sense of expectations and environment and would be able to make better use of my time. Next time I would like to dedicate a fellowship to writing as well as attending events and guest lecturing.
