It is with deep sadness that Al-Mahdi Institute has learned of the passing of the Late Reverend Dr Richard Sudworth. A Life of Bridge-Building
Revd. Dr Richard Sudworth was a distinguished theologian and a devoted advocate for interfaith engagement whose life’s work stood at the intersection of Christian ministry, public life, and dialogue with other faith traditions. In recognition of his longstanding commitment to faith in the public sphere, he was appointed in November as Director of Faith and Public Life for the Church of England. Prior to this role, he served as Secretary for Inter-Religious Affairs to the Archbishop of Canterbury, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the Church’s engagement with religious diversity at both national and international levels.
Throughout his career, Revd. Dr Sudworth exemplified a rare combination of theological depth, compassionate leadership, and an unwavering commitment to building understanding between communities of faith. He was widely recognised for his contributions to Jewish–Christian–Muslim dialogue, bringing intellectual rigour, humility, and genuine respect into every conversation and collaborative endeavour.
Contributions to Interfaith Dialogue
Revd. Dr Sudworth’s engagement with interreligious scholarship and practice helped shape meaningful encounters among scholars, clergy, and students from diverse traditions. His work emphasised not only shared values but also the importance of listening deeply to differences with humility and care.
Beyond academic forums, he was deeply involved with community-level initiatives and partnerships that brought people of different faiths together for shared reflection, service, and learning.
Revd. Dr Sudworth and AMI
Al-Mahdi Institute was honoured to host and work alongside Revd. Dr Sudworth on multiple occasions, during which he played a significant role in advancing our interfaith engagement efforts.
His involvement included facilitating and supervising scriptural reasoning sessions that brought together AMI Hawza students and Christian ministers in training from the Queen’s Foundation, creating open and safe spaces for joint reflection on sacred texts and ethical themes.
Revd. Dr Sudworth also contributed to AMI’s academic and public life through participation in interfaith events such as the Big Iftar, where he represented Christian perspectives with insight, empathy, and collegiality.
He also delivered a public research seminar at AMI entitled Christian Responses to the Political Challenge of Islam: Christian–Muslim Engagements in the Public Square on the 3rd March 2014, in which he offered thoughtful Christian perspectives on Islam in contemporary political discourse and the shared responsibilities of faith communities in public life.
A Legacy of Dialogue and Friendship
Revd. Dr Sudworth will be remembered by friends as a true friend of many communities, including the Jewish community, where tributes highlighted his warmth, sincerity, and deep commitment to mutual respect in interfaith relations. His passing leaves a profound sense of loss, but also a legacy of dialogue, friendship, and shared endeavour.
