On the 4th July 2025, Dr Wahid Amin presented a paper titled: “Divine Simplicity, Divine Attributes, and the Unity of Existence in Mullā Ṣadrā” at the Second Manchester Workshop on Islamic Philosophy at the University of Manchester.
In this presentation, Dr Amin explored Mullā Ṣadrā’s profound claim that “the Simple Reality is all things” (al-basīṭ al-ḥaqīqa kullu al-ashyāʾ). The paper analysed Ṣadrā’s unique reinterpretation of simplicity and composition, particularly his identification of a sixth, previously unrecognised, form of composition between being (wujūd) and non-being (ʿadam) as the key to understanding contingency and imperfection.
Through a rigorous demonstration grounded in tashkīk al-wujūd (gradation of being) and aṣālat al-wujūd (primacy of existence), Dr Amin showed how Ṣadrā reconciles divine simplicity with the multiplicity of attributes, affirming that all existential perfections are predicated of God in a nobler mode. The presentation highlighted Ṣadrā’s ambition to bridge mystical insight with philosophical demonstration, affirming divine immanence without compromising transcendence.
