The Centre for Intra-Muslim Studies (CIMS) at Al-Mahdi Institute is pleased to convene its inaugural round table discussion for the year 2025, examining the discourse on Islam and Violence. This discussion brings together distinguished scholars from diverse schools of thought and sects within Islam to engage in the critical exploration of various aspects of the discourse on violence related to Islamic history, theology, jurisprudence, and its implications on the contemporary challenges faced by Muslims individually and as a community.
Key themes to be discussed include:
- Violence in Islamic Texts: Examining the conceptualisation of violence, its contextualisation and its use in the Quran and Hadith.
- Conceptualisation of Violence in Islamic Theology: Analysing the theological basis of violence as means or end. Uncovering the notion of Jihad and War considering the Meccan/Medinan Model.
- Juridical Views on Force: Jurisprudential perspectives on the regulation, permissibility, and ethical limits of force.
- Contemporary Challenges: Addressing complex issues such as blasphemy, freedom of expression, tolerance, and the concept of the Islamic State, alongside their implications for interfaith dialogue and global Muslim-non-Muslim relations.
