Ayatollah Seyyed Mostafa Mohaghegh Damad (born 1945 in Qom, Iran) is a scholar of Islamic law, philosophy, and jurisprudence who has bridged traditional Shiʿi seminary training and modern academic scholarship. He completed his religious education at the Fayzieh School in Qom, achieving the status of ijtihād (Ayatollah) in 1970, while also earning a BA in Islamic philosophy (1969) and an MA in Islamic jurisprudence (1980) from the University of Tehran. Later, he received a PhD in law from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium (1996). He is a longstanding member of the Iranian Academy of Sciences (since 1988), and since 2007 has held a professorship in the Faculty of Law at Shahid Beheshti University. Over his career, Damad has held significant roles such as director of the Department of Islamic Studies at the Academy of Sciences, head of national judicial commissions, and inspectorate chief. His scholarship spans Islamic jurisprudence, theology, philosophy, interfaith dialogue, human rights, the environment, and the laws of armed conflict. He is known for advocating compatibility between Islamic legal principles and universal human rights, and for engaging in interreligious initiatives aimed at mutual understanding and peace.
